McDermott Successfully Completes Decommissioning of Campbell Platform in Western Australia
McDermott recently announced the successful completion of the decommissioning of the Campbell platform and related offshore infrastructure on the Varanus Island hub in Western Australia. The project, which was awarded to McDermott in January 2024 by Santos, involved the engineering, procurement, removal, and transportation of the platform topsides, substructures, and related components to an onshore facility for dismantling and disposal.
According to Mahesh Swaminathan, McDermott’s Senior Vice President, Subsea and Floating Facilities, the successful removal of the Campbell platform topsides and substructures showcased McDermott’s expertise in circular practices and subsea project execution. The project also demonstrated McDermott’s commitment to supporting clients in addressing complex challenges and promoting circularity in Australia’s energy sector.
A key factor in the project’s success was the deployment of a custom-built lifting cradle designed and constructed at McDermott’s Batam fabrication yard. The lifting cradle, engineered with assistance from teams in Perth, Australia; Chennai, India; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was specifically tailored to handle the unique complexities of the platform’s substructures.
