Panasonic Power acquires license from CAMX Energy for latest GEMX® platform for active cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries
CAMX Energy LLC and Panasonic Power Co. have recently announced that Panasonic Power has acquired a license from CAMX for the latest GEMX® platform for active cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the development of cutting-edge battery technologies that are essential for the advancement of electric vehicles and other energy storage applications.
The GEMX® platform, based on fundamental inventions by CAMX, has been granted over 30 patents worldwide, including in the US, EU, Korea, Japan, and China. These innovations strategically place cobalt, aluminum, and other materials through molecular engineering at critical locations within cathode particles, resulting in reduced cobalt consumption, increased stability, higher performance, and lower costs for all classes of nickel-based cathode materials, including high manganese. The products derived from these innovations are known under the brand names gNMC®, gNMCA®, gNCA®, and gLNO®.
“By acquiring licenses for technologies like the GEMX platform, CAMX can rapidly bring its inventions to market on a broader scale for the benefit of society,” said Kenan Sahin, President and Founder of CAMX. This collaboration with Panasonic Power, a leading player in the battery industry, will undoubtedly accelerate the development and adoption of advanced battery technologies for a sustainable future.
Panasonic Power, a subsidiary of the Panasonic Group, has a rich history of innovation in the battery sector, with a focus on lithium-ion batteries for the automotive industry, battery storage systems, and dry batteries. The company is committed to providing safe, reliable, and efficient energy solutions for various industries, including mobility, social infrastructure, medical devices, and consumer goods. By incorporating the GEMX platform into its cathode offerings, Panasonic Power is poised to maintain its position as a leading cell manufacturer in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
The cost of cells accounts for a significant portion of an electric vehicle’s total cost, with approximately half of the cell cost attributed to the cathode. By integrating GEMX into its cathode portfolio, Panasonic Power aims to enhance the performance and cost-effectiveness of its battery solutions, thereby contributing to the wider adoption of electric vehicles and clean energy technologies.
In conclusion, the collaboration between CAMX Energy and Panasonic Power represents a significant step forward in the development of advanced battery technologies for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. By leveraging the innovative GEMX platform, both companies are poised to drive the future of sustainable mobility and energy storage solutions.
